Winter is coming and I am flat out of lip balm so tonight I am making a fresh batch. :)
I've been making my own lip balm for quite some time and I thought this time I'd share how to make it. It's easy to do and you can make lip balm exactly the way you like it. The ingredients are inexpensive and often easy to obtain in health, nature & beauty shops, even online. The quality of lip balm you end up with rivals that of the more expensive brands that we have in the shops here in NL and what I absolutely like best about it is that it lacks all of the chemical additives that are found in store bought products.
To make a batch of about 100ml you'll need:
+/- 15g Cosmetic grade beeswax
+/- 33g Shea butter
+/- 15g Cocoa butter
+/- 33ml Sweet Almond Oil
+/- 10 drops of flavour oil
You'll also need:
10x 10ml pots or other containers of choice
A pan of water at boiling point
A jug
A spoon
Start by putting the cocoa butter in the jug and melt it in the heat of the water.
After that, stir in the beeswax and allow that to melt too.
Once the wax has melted, add the Shea butter and allow it to melt fully.
Take the jug out of the water and stir in the sweet almond oil.
Add around 10 drops of the flavour oil and stir it into the mixture.
If the mixture starts to set too soon, just put the jug back in the hot water for a few seconds.
Scoop the mixture into the containers and allow it to completely cool down and set before using.
* If you like a really soft lip balm, use a bit more almond oil. If you like a harder lip balm instead, increase the amount of beeswax by +/- 3g.
To test if the lip balm is to your liking before scooping it into the containers, take out a little bit on a teaspoon and put it in the fridge to let it cool and set quickly. Keep the rest of the mixture liquid in the jug and make adjustments if necessary.
* Addicted to chocolate? Add a square of your favourite chocolate instead of flavour oil. Put it in as you are melting the last ingredients and stir it in.
Time required: 15 to 20 minutes
